ATMs, Banking and QR Payments

QR payments and local bank accounts

Apps let you pay QR codes at local grocery stores, cafรฉs, restaurants, markets and street vendors. Most international and tourist-facing businesses also accept Visa and Mastercard.

Many people open a Timo Bank account with a tourist visa, passport, Vietnamese phone number and address, then pay local QR codes through the app. The same is possible with Sacombank, Vietcombank and others.

Important

A tourist-visa account freezes each time your eVisa expires โ€” you need a short visit to the bank with the new eVisa to unfreeze it. You cannot transfer money from the Vietnamese account back to a foreign bank, and you cannot get an ATM card on a tourist visa.

Transfers from a foreign account into the Vietnamese account are common; Revolut, for example, typically charges around $1โ€“2 per transaction. Paying directly with a foreign card at a shop may add 3โ€“5% to the bill.

Currency exchange

Buck Service in An Thuong is the exchange most often mentioned by the community, at roughly 1% commission.
